Storm Riders Rough Up The Gnaturals
New Lenox, IL - Tuesday night was the first time this year that it felt like fall. With the weather in the low 60's at game time and an occasional spritz of rain, the Gnaturals took on the Storm Riders in an effort to break a two game losing streak. The game proved to be entertaining as the game turned into an offensive battle. Each team scored in all but one inning with Storm Riders coming out swinging to take a 3-1 lead after an inning. S.R. scored five more runs in the second inning while holding the Gnats scoreless to lead 8-1 after two innings. S.R. continued the barrage scoring four more in their half of the third inning to take a commanding 12-1 lead. The Gnats were not done yet as they scored six runs in the bottom of the third with the scoring capped off on a Whitehouse bomb off the top of the safety fence in left field to close the score to 12-7 after three. S.R. kept piling on the runs scoring five times in the fourth inning to take a 10 run bulge. The Gnats answered with four runs of their own on the strength of a Coach Ken 2-RBI double to close the margin to 17-11. The Gnats held serve in the top of the 5th inning to give themselves a chance to catch up, and that they did. The Gnats sent 12 men to the plate in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 17 apiece. With time running out on the game clock, S.R. scored four runs in the final frame of the night to take a 21-17 lead going into the bottom of the 6th. The Gnats got the first three base runners on but came up short scoring only a run to fall short 21-18 in one of the most entertaining games of the years. The Storm Riders win was their first of the year now tying them with the Gnats for 8th place in the 9 team league. The Gnaturals look to turn things around next Tuesday at 8:30 PM when they take on The Scrappers.
Noteables:
Who The Hell Is He? - Overheard the game umpire ask a member of the Storm Riders; "What's this team's name? The Nationals??"
K-K-K-Catching - With the team flush with outfielders, Ka-Koz started out the game at catcher.Old School - Not just the name on the back of Ken's jersey. He rounded the bag at first wide and then purposely got into a rundown to try and get a run across instead of giving himself up as an easy out. The plan worked when a Storm Rider saw the runner from third going home and threw to try and get the third out. The plan also worked when Stapes slid between the catcher's legs to get home safely. The only snag is that the umpire thought differently and called Stapes out. Ump Orange blows.
Me Me!!! - Jeff vehemently called Jack off of a foul fly ball in the 2nd inning and then did not make the tough catch. Punishingly enough, the batter hit a home run in the same at-bat........OUCH!
Juicer - Whitehouse hit a no-doubter high off the safety fence in left field that was actually more of a line drive. If the ball had more elevation, it might have cleared the basketball net.
Like a Puma - Zlogar made a putout on what would have been the third strike anyway but quickly pounced on a short pop out toward the screen in cat-like reflex.
Wil E. Coyote - In what has to be the worst hop in the history of mankind, Jeff was awaiting a grounder with his glove when the ball literally hopped over his head and looped straight down over his back in what can best be described as a cartoon bounce. Since Jeff is the Gazette's freelance artist, we had to go to our backup man, Dick Pencil, for the professional depiction seen below......................
2004 Rebel Rules - Hey boys, have some fun playing this game. Everyone makes the playoffs, so you're dangerous. Enjoy yourselves and you'll pick up some wins along the way.
