Volts Knock Off Ivy League

New Lenox, IL - On Canada Wild Fire Night at the Lions Den, High Voltage finished up the regular season against Ivy League in what was a battle for 2nd place honors and a chance to take on Son's of Pitches in game 1 of the playoffs.  The Volts started out hot by recording five consecutive hits followed by a Pratl homerun to take charge 6-0 after a half inning. Ivy League came back with three runs to cut the score in half 6-3 after an inning. The Volts pushed a run across in the 2nd inning when Zlogar doubled home Stapes to make the score 7-3. That lead held up as Ivy did not score in their half of the inning.  The Volts continued in the 3rd inning when the bottom of the order did all of the damage by scoring four runs with two of them coming when Foster hit a two run single to score Jamaica and Jeff. Arik scored while running for Ken on a Jack RBI single and Foster came home on a Koz RBI knock to build the lead to 11-3, and that lead held up as Ivy went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning. After the Volts went scoreless in the 4th, Ivy tacked on two more runs on Stern's second homerun on the night.  The big lumberjack accounted for 5 of Ivy's runs on the evening.  The Volts got back on track in the 5th as Stapes homered in himself, Foster, and Koz to increase the lead to 14-5.  Sutes followed with a single and Zlogar doubled to put runners on second and third for Pratl who hit the ball sharply to third base.  Ivy Koz scooped it up and threw late to home as Sutes touched home for another Volt run.  Jamaica ended the scoring with a sacrifice fly to drive in Zlogar to cap the night at 16 runs.  Ivy added a solo homerun in their half of the 6th inning but could not score again as the Volts took second place with a 5 inning, 16-6 victory over Ivy League.  All teams are off next week for the Independence Day holiday with the playoffs starting on Tuesday, July 11th and High Voltage taking on Son's of Pitches at 7:30PM.

Noteables:

He Gone - The rumors last week were true, Bobby Boucher is no longer welcome in the Zlogar house.  RETURNED.  If the team dresses up for a Halloween game, maybe Z will come as Red Boyou.

Welcome Back - As voted by the Live Wires, Jamaica gets the nod as Catch of the Day.  With the Volts ahead 11-5 and Ivy at bat, "Coach" hit what looked like a gapper to left-center field but D tracked it down and dove for the out to put a dagger in the hopes of Ivy League as the next two batters would ground out to Ken for what turned out to be a quiet two-run inning instead of a bigger rally.

Smoke Screen - The Lion's Den hosted the first Canada Wild Fire Night as each fan in attendance received 100 particles of smoke per cubic inch as they entered the park.  Stapes is seen here stretching underneath the faded orange sun that would normally wreak havoc on batters and infielders looking westward.

Greg Brady - Upon further review, Sutes was as safe on the close play at the plate in the 5th inning as it appeared to the naked eye.  Sutes hit more people in that inning than Bobby Boucher did in the Bourbon Bowl.

Milk Crates - Let's hope that the Comish actually reads this sign as he passes it to go to his office on a daily basis. "Improve the quality of life" and "provide safe recreational opportunities" by fixing the batters box before the Fall season.

Peacemaker - Koz holds a meeting between Uncle Gary and Sutes after the game to settle their difference and bury the hatchet.  Can we still say "bury the hatchet"?  Both men are seen here discussing why Foster owes so much fine money to the Kangaroo Court.  Neither could figure that one out but both walked away with mutual respect.

Seen This Many Times - Both Stapes and Jeff think that they are getting their picture taken.  WRONG!  Lauren II hustles out of there like her bladder may have been pushed to the limit by that last beverage.  Raise your hand kids if you've had to step on the gas to make it home in time.

Tax Dollars - Well, looks like the park district has enough money to pay for TOPTRACER at The Sanctuary.  Fixing the batters box should be a piece of cake comparatively.  Here's a proposal if the batters box is not fixed.  Tie Mayor Balderman and Commissioner Wetfoot to a pole in the middle of the center target, have each member of the team purchase a large bucket of balls, pull out your drivers, swing, and keep it low.

Air Quality - We told you it was bad out there on Tuesday night.  Will County was in the purple range, which is as bad as it gets.  The air doesn't usually get this dirty unless you are at a political fund raiser.

Crowd - Not the biggest crowd the Volts have ever had but the ladies were in full force to make some noise in route to a Volt victory.  The win put the team at 8-2, which is the best Summer League finish in team history.

Shoe the Shoeless II - Bear with me here.  When discussing the Boucher jersey return during the game, LizZlo said that she also returned a pair of boots as well.  Lauren II followed up with a story of a pair of boots she bought for the Shania Twain concert that, when she received them, had dirt on them.  We secretly asked Lauren what size she wears, and her answer was 7.5.  We then asked Liz what size shoe she wears, and guess what.......it's 7.5.  You can't make this stuff up.

Take it All - There's a few Rico's that we know.  There's former baseball players Rico Carty and Rico Patricelli.  Then there is former JJC Wolves David Rico.  Good old number 33 on Alcoballic's is representing the Rico Statute in which one has all of their belongings taken from them if prosecuted for racketeering.  Not sure what "Rico" was up to but he now finds himself in rehab playing for the Alcoballic's.

Cheerio Old Boy - Jamaica spent time abroad over the past couple of weeks.  This is the Home of Golf in Scotland, St. Andrews Golf Club.  Jamaica later would take an innocuous picture of the course and unbeknown to him, Sir Nick Faldo was on the range in the background.  Didn't make that up either. Should we now call him Scotty instead of Jamaica???

Rarities - Has there ever been a game that Sutes did not have an RBI?  Tonight was one of them.  He made it on base all four times but could muster no RBI's in the process.  Another rarity is an 8-4 groundout.  Well, Ken did that tonight when Cousin Troy pinched in the infield and soaked up a groundball off the bat of Ken and tossed it to second for a force out.  Ken shouted; "Man, I wanted to elevate that" as he assured all who would listen that he would have had a triple if he could of hit that over Troy's head.  That might be a stretch but a standup double for sure. WWLS???  That's "What would Lauren say?" if you are scoring at home.

World's Columbian Exposition I- Also known as The World's Fair, was held in Chicago in 1893 to celebrate the 400 anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival to the New World.  The event went from May 1 through October 30.  Interestingly enough, the smallpox epidemic broke out in the summer of that year.  Shortly before the closing ceremonies, the Mayor of Chicago, Carter Harrison was assassinated.  Just shortly after the fair ended, a fire wiped out all but two building from the exposition.  Now that's the trouble trifecta!

World's Columbian Exposition II - Just like in the summer of 2020 when a pandemic reared its ugly head and put undo pressures onto society, the same happened in 1893.  Seen here are three columns pulled from the rubble of the "world's fair" in New Lenox just off Haven Street.  The story goes that a group of men from Will County protested the world's fair and disrupted horse traffic in downtown Chicago.  The men called themselves Farmers Lives Matter (FLM).  FLM tore down the remints of one of the picturesque buildings, loaded it on a stolen horse and carriage and brought these columns to New Lenox.  FLM wanted their own version of the fair and had a three-day bender at the site of these columns and called the event Proud American Days.
