Turtles Shock The World

New Lenox, IL - It was one of those nights.  Beautiful early fall evening with temps in the low 80's and calm winds.  The only thing missing was a full moon.  High Voltage took on Daytona Turtles in what was expected to be a quick march to the parking lot as the Volts held hopes of getting to second place in the overall standings and the Turtles looking to score more than four runs for the first time this season. The Volts fielded folks like Wade II, Meadowlark Lemon, The Flash, and Chief Wahoo as they took the field to play the fun and eclectic Turtles. The visiting Volts jumped on the scoreboard with a four-spot in the first inning. The Turtles came back with three runs of their own to cut the score to 4-3 after an inning. The Volts pushed two more runs across in the top of the second, while the Daytona Turtles answered back with five runs to go ahead 8-6 after two innings.  Scoring eight runs in and of itself is a monumental accomplishment for the Turtles as they had only scored 14 runs all season with tops of four runs against both High Voltage and Brew Jays.  Something was in the air alright. Things seemed to return to normal in the third inning as High Voltage sent 15 men to the plate and scored nine runs to take a 15-8 lead after 2 1/2 innings. The resilient Turtles fought back with six runs to cut the score to 15-14 after three innings, and match their entire season run output in just a half a game. Both teams went scoreless in the fourth inning. The Volts returned on the board in the fifth inning with a four run output to lead 19-14 with the hopes of slipping by with a win against their winless opponent. The Turtles had other things in mind, as they scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth on the strength of a grand slam from their eleven hitter Grant Greenshirt.  Turtles led 21-19 with less than three minutes on the game clock, and the Volts coming to bat to try and save the day. Saving the day would not be in the cards tonight as the Volts could only muster one hit in the last frame to go down to the Turtles for their first win in franchise history.  Final score of Daytona Turtles 21 - High Voltage 19.  With the loss, the Volts are eliminated from the money and can only play the part of spoiler next week by beating Beggars Pizza.  Game time next week is at 7:30PM. Bring your jackets and BEANIES to the game, as the weather is going to change to the cooler side of things.  After next week's last regular season game, the Volts will look to be the sleeper in the playoff round as a three or seed, depending on how the games play out. Simply, a win against Beggars next week buys the Volts the opportunity of playing against Daytona Turtles in the first round of the playoffs as 3 seed vs 6 seed.

Notables:

Standings - In other Tuesday action, White Horse beat Ivy League 25-21.  That is the fifth loss in a row for Ivy since beating the Volts earlier this season. Brew Jays defeated Beggars 19-18. Next week is a winner take all match for first place between 6-1 Brew Jays vs 5-2 White Horse.  White Horse owns the edge on a tie via an early season win against the Jays.

Time and Temp - 86 degrees on October 3rd is something special.  Fans were treated to what could be the last "shirt weather" game of the season.  Thank you to former Gazette weather person Barry Shaft for coming out to the game last evening and providing the info.

Out of the Box - It was nice having Arik back from his stint on the back of a milk carton.  Arik started out hot with three line drive base hits.

Huh??? - Saw this on the Gazette streaming app.  Being that this is an NFL game, I don't think the baseball Giants would be much worse than the football Giants.  Play on.........

What's a Year - Happy Birthday to Deb who celebrates her 29th birthday on Wednesday.  She is seen here checking her phone to squeeze an appointment into her busy schedule.

Hypnotized - Seems like the Turtles cast a spell on High Voltage on Tuesday. Thee Magical Music Box gets some of the credit.  Subliminal messaging was piped into the music, which led to the Turtles first win in their brief existence.

What is Going On Here - Tony Delveccio from the Little House of the Inept prepared the field on Tuesday.  The plate looks much higher than usual.  The drag marks extended from the mound to the plate, and continued in 90 degree fashion around the bases.  You get what you pay for Wetfoot.

Three Men In a Boat - A lighter moment before the start of the game on Tuesday.

Wade II - Tom was in the lineup for the game against the Turtles.  Senor Tomas had two walks and .667 on-base percentage. That .667 on-base was better than  seven regulars.

One for the Dogs - Even the Live Wires thought that something was in the air last night.

Put Me In Coach - On that theme, Argus began practicing his fielding just in case an opportunity arises in the future to insert him into the game as a defensive replacement.  We caught up with Stapes, who worked with the pooch; "He's rough around the edges but I think there's talent here.  He nearly throws as good as Ken".  Thanks for that insight.

The Shift - It was death by paper cuts last night as the Turtles found a way to nickel and dime hits in any hole that existed.  Things got to a point where Koz came into play short-center field.  It worked for an inning, as the Turtles didn't know what to do.  One got the feeling that the Turtles were going to win last night no matter what.  The last inning was the final kick in the nards, as the second baseman came up with a "look what I got here" catch, and then executed the throw.  Tip of the caps to the Turtles for winning on the square.

Fully Committed - Now this is how you do it.  Co-winners of the Gazette Costume of the Year.  Meadowlark Lemon and The Flash.  Well done boys!

Proper Warm-up - With Tom in the lineup on Tuesday evening, Ken goes over his stretching routine with the young man.  Ken; "You start with a 12 ounce curl to get the blood flowing in the arm.  Next, you place the beer on the ground to stretch out the back.  Rinse and repeat until two cans are emptied.  Stretch complete".

Picnic - Probably the only game in team history where MB/Gnats/Volts lost a game and were not upset.  Everyone stuck around to be critiqued by the birthday girl.

Warpath - Chief Wahoo joins Meadowlark for a photo.  Even the Washington Generals win once in a while.

One For The History Books - With this third inning stolen base, Jack became the New Lenox Men's Softball League's all-time leading base stealer.

By the Numbers -
Jack - 2 for 4 - 2 Runs - 2 RBI
Jake - 4 for 4 - 4 Runs - 3 RBI
Stapes - 1 for 2 - 1 Runs - 2 RBI - 1 BB - 1 SAC
Sutor - 4 for 4 - 3 Runs - 7 RBI
Zlogs - 1 for 3 - 2 Runs - 1 BB
Pratl - 2 for 3 - 1 Run - 1 RBI - 1 BB
Dylan - 3 for 4 - 1 Run
Arik - 3 for 4 - 1 Run 4 RBI
Jeff - 0 for 3 - 1 Run - 1 BB
