Volts Go Hog Wild in Opener

New Lenox, IL - Tuesday was a mix of different emotions at The Lions Den as High Voltage kicked off the 2025 season.  With the team looking to run their championship form to a third consecutive session, word on the street was released that this will be the final season played at the old ballpark before moving to the $10 Million facility a few miles up the road this fall.  With perfect weather conditions in the low 70's, High Voltage began the season with a much different look.  With the absence of Koz, Stapes, Jamaica, and Noah, the Volts began the season with a meet and greet in the dugout minutes before the contest.  The game against Hog Wild (formerly Corona) was tight all the way with both teams trading small leads until the fifth inning when the Volts batted around for seven runs to build a double-digit lead.  Pesty Hog Wild stayed in the game until the end by scoring enough runs to keep the game going but could not muster a big enough inning to close the gap.  In the end, High Voltage prevailed 18-8 over the spirited Hog Wild team that has moved nights in the New Lenox leagues on a couple of occasions.  Next up for the Volts is a match against Paradise Bay on Tuesday, May 13th with an 8:30PM start.  Next week is Earplug night at the Lions Den.  Free earplugs to the first 10,000 fans as the matchup between these two foes always promised a lot of yapping.

Notables:

Anyone's Guess - Well, we now know that Hog Wild is Corona.  We think the Vegas Bombers are The Daytona Turtles but not for certain.  We know who Paradise Bay and The Volts are, so time will tell who the remainder of the league is as Tuesday sports a full eight team roster that will fill the spring/summer with men's softball.  Without rainouts, the championship game is scheduled for July 29.  A date that will surely change.  If for no other reason, because the schedulers only have two playoff games listed on July 22.  Stay tuned to the weather apps for alterations in the dates, and to the NLCPD for further announcements.

Late Scratch - It didn't take long but the Capn received a text right before 5 PM on Tuesday that  BOGO would be excusing himself from the action.  We hope everything is ok in the world of BOGO, if not we'll call off the dogs.  If so, you shall now be known as The Great BOGO.  With that name, you think he would play a game and then take one off.

Pay the Man His Money - Only two players remain to pay the yearly fee.  Of course, one of them is BOGO.  Perhaps he is counting on his sponsor (Sutes) to foot the bill.  The other, you guessed it, is Sutes.  Not to worry.  Our crime correspondent, Lefty Swipe, is a long time fan of Sutes and has a couple of solutions to come up with the money.  Solution 1:  The next time you go to deposit $80 into Draftkings for some frivolous Yankees bet, Venmo it to El Capitan instead.  It will be money well spent in that the Yankees will eventually cause your bankroll to empty anyway.  Solution 2:  At the Pickleball lesson, when Old Man Arthur has to take a shit after five minutes of activity, quickly change shoes, run into the stall next to him, grab $80 out of his pocket while his pants are down (another $80 for BOGO if Arthur has it), run out, change back your shoes, run back out to the court, wait for Arthur to return, and ask him if everything came out ok.  Good luck.

It's (Not so) Complicated - The roundabout at the intersection of Cedar and Haven roads will be completed by the time nobody is playing at The Lions Den this fall.  The Gazette is having a Trip for Two contest to join Richard Blatzo in the inaugural Hillbilly 500 to be held in the roundabout on opening weekend.  The winners of the contest get the prize of sitting in the back seat of Blatzo's ride to jump in the roundabout and go in circles until the vehicle runs out of gas.  Who is riding shotgun?  Old School of course.  Bring your favorite drink, some headache meds, and a pee bag to join in on the fun.  All you have to do is put a comment in the section below to enter a random drawing to win and bring a friend to hours of entertainment at the inaugural Hillbilly 500.

We Need a Better Camera Person - Visitors of the game on Tuesday were treated to a rare citing, a Bald Eagle was making its presence felt for an inning or two before landing on top of the light standard and peering at the uninteresting events below.  The Eagle subsequently flew away in disgust.

Huh? - Is that Jerry taking an at bat for the Volts?  Why yes it is, Jerry is now a member of High Voltage.  Apparently his former team broke up so Jer took to the phone lines this past winter and made himself into a Volt player for the final session at the Lions Den.  Which makes one realize that with the move to the new confines this fall, High Voltage "IS" the last team to win a Tuesday Night Fall League championship at the old Lions Den with the 2024 title.

More to Come - We'll have more to say on the shape of the team, the last season at The Lions Den, and a few other thoughts on some topics, but that is for a Gazette to come.  Right now, time is short today and we have to go and join a planning meeting at the village hall to go over the design of the new building on the site of what will be the vacant Lions Den.
