Volts By Numbers
New Lenox, IL - We are taking an early look at the numbers after most teams have played six games with the exception of High Voltage and Sons of Pitches who have played five games. The current standings are as such:
1. Alcoballic's 5-1
2. Brew Jays 4-1-1
3. High Voltage 4-1
4. IVY League 3-2-1
5. Beggars Pizza 2-4
6. White Horse 1-5
7. Sons of Pitches 0-5
Tossing the numbers through the Gazette proprietary Bozoputer and analyzing Pythagorean account of runs scored verses runs allowed, we come up with an approximate of how the teams should stand at this junction of the season. Remember that there are no absolutes, and a six game sample is likely too small to bank on but we might be able to glance at the teams who may be a bit unlucky or whose records are loftier than should be. Here is what the Bozoputer suggests the records should be at this point:
1. High Voltage 4-1
2. Alcoballic's 4-2
3. Brew Jay's 4-2
4. IVY League 3-3
5. Beggars Pizza 2-4
6. White Horse 2-4
7. Sons of Pitches 1-4
Nearly every team is playing to the runs that they produce. Alcoballic's may have an extra win than they should but two through five pretty much match the expectations. Interestingly enough, one of the teams who has been historically lucky, White Horse (The Scrappers), are about one game underachieving while Sons of Pitches should have one game in the win column. We'll keep an eye on this come playoff time to help with the predictions of how the post season might prove out.
By The Inning
Last fall, the Gnaturals had a breakout season and finished every game early except the losing effort to IVY League in the playoffs, which was a 7 inning game. We'll take a look at the offensive output thus far this season as well as how the team is performing defensively, as well as an offensive comparison against the Fall 22 campaign. The following are the scoring averages per inning by High Voltage after just five games:
Offensively
1st Inning - 6.2 Runs (5 games)
2nd Inning - 1.6 Runs (5 games)
3rd Inning - 2.2 Runs (5 games)
4th Inning - 4.2 Runs (5 games)
5th Inning - 3.67 Runs (3 games)
6th Inning - 6 Runs (3 games)
7th Inning - 0 Runs (1 game)
Defensively
1st Inning - 1 Run (5 games)
2nd Inning - 0.8 Runs (5 games)
3rd Inning - 2.6 Runs (5 games)
4th Inning - 2.8 Runs (5 games)
5th Inning - 3.8 Runs (4 games)
6th Inning - 2 Runs (2 games)
7th Inning - 0 Runs (1 game)
The Volts are once again jumping out with offense and taking a breather. The big difference between the 2023 season from the past is the team has re-rallied in the later innings where in the past the bats went totally silent. Of concern defensively is that the Volts are stingy early but spring a leak from the third inning onward.
Below is an offensive comparison between the season thus far and the fall 22 season.
Summer 23 Fall 22
1st Inning - 6.2 Runs 7.0
2nd Inning - 1.6 Runs 3.3
3rd Inning - 2.2 Runs 1.6
4th Inning - 4.2 Runs 2.0
5th Inning - 3.67 Runs 2.25
6th Inning - 6 Runs 1.4
7th Inning - 0 Runs 5.0
High Voltage has scored in 22 of 26 at-bats and has allowed the to score in 18 of 27. Volts shut down their opponent 1/3 of the time thus far in 2023 season.
